What is premature atrial contractions and is it serious??

Monday, March 10th, 2008
millerc3 asked:

I was just told that I have this condition following an EKG I had done. I’m only 24 years old and it scared me. I would like to know how serious it is and how likely it is for me to have blood clots and have a stroke (like I was told is very possible).

Monday, March 10th, 2008
technomanmike asked:

Around two days ago, i started to notice a feeling in my heart like it is skipping a beat or fluttering. I went to the cardiologist today and he said i have premature atrial contractions. I am now wearing a 24 hour holster that records my heart rate. I have around 8 PACs a minute. Should i be worried?
I am seventeen years old, 5 foot 8, and weigh around 160.

Can food trigger Atrial Fibrillation?

Saturday, March 8th, 2008
Aaron asked:

Anyone experience the following symptoms after eating meals:
Racing heart (palpitations), PVCs (premature ventricular contractions), bloated feeling in mid-section (above stomach), nausea/queasiness, diarrhea, fatigue, anxiety?

Last month I felt this way after eating, and all of a sudden I got dry heaves and my heart suddenly “jumped” into an arrhythmia while I was trying to throwup. Doctors said it was a very “chaotic” episode of atrial fibrillation. My heart finally converted to a normal sinus rhythm after enduring a long, 18-hour ordeal. Now after everytime I eat anything, or drink anything, I almost start to feel this way again and it depresses me. I eat very little throughout the day because of it. It doesn’t matter what I eat or drink either. From drinking alot of water, to eating an apple, to eating fast food, to whatever, I still get this way. Don’t ’spose anyone else has a similar experience?
Very interesting, patsy. I also find that if I sit for extended periods of time, my stomach feels unusually compressed and tight, as if my stomach is pushed “upwards” into my mid-section, also feels like I have alot of belching to do, but can’t, and my heart tends to skip and race during this, and of course if I eat, it makes it worse..I can definitely see the connection of a possible hiatal hernia causing my A-Fib episodes. Thanks for your insight

How dangerous are premature atrial contractions if they happen 15-20 times a day?

Saturday, March 8th, 2008
r fellow asked:

I’ve been diagnosed as having PAC’s (premature atrial contractions). I’ve been told by my doctor that they’re harmless, and I ignored them when they were only happening a couple of times a day. They are now becoming more frequent though.. more like 15-20 times a day and it’s starting to worry me. Should I be concerned? Thank you.

I have an abberant atrial focus, and today was told that my new EKG shows an ectopic P wave. What is this?

Tuesday, March 4th, 2008
countrygirl_roni asked:

I am a 40 yr old female, and had the EKG as part of my annual physical. The abberant atrial focus was diagnosed in 2002, and after a few visits, the cardiologist cleared me. I will be seeing him again with this change in my EKG, but have to wait several weeks to see him. I am VERY interested in what this means, especially as I have major back surgery scheduled for May. My GP said the surgeon will require cardiac clearance before he agrees to operate. I am VERY glad this was detected before my “pre-op” appointment so I have time to play with before the May 16th surgery date.!

Heart ablation, Pros and Cons ?

Sunday, March 2nd, 2008
dracomullet asked:

I have intermitent rapid atrial fibrulation, my electrphysiologist wants me to have a heart ablation when the go in an kill the part of your heart that is misfiring. I am not sure this is the way to go since my condition is intermittant and therefor not predictable. I don’t like that they will be zapping parts of my heart that may be healthy and weakening my heart further. Pros and Cons please.

Are premature atrial contractions (PACs) always harmless?

Saturday, March 1st, 2008
kristen asked:

Doesn’t it depend on the cause? It seems doctors always dismiss it by saying “Oh, it’s nothing, don’t drink coffee,” but they don’t think about the fact that somebody’s blood sugar or electrolytes could be low at the time.

And I don’t care what anybody says; it is extremely uncomfortable to be out of breath and feeling as though one’s heart is not beating properly, so one should not simply be told to ignore it. Coffee rarely causes such symptoms, especially 1-2 cups of mild coffee a day.

Furthermore, the more you tax the heart, the quicker it will wear out.

Why is it that I know more than doctors and I have no medical degree? Is it b/c they are so busy trying to shove you out so they can get the next patient in? This is the feeling I get.
